Fernán Gómez, Fernando

Fernán Gómez, Fernando
b. 1921, Lima (Peru)
   Actor and filmmaker
Hugely successful as a film actor, Fernán Gómez is also a noted film director, novelist, dramatist and poet. Born in Peru but brought up in Spain from a very early age, he began his acting career in the theatre when the Civil War interrupted his studies. In 1951 he played the husband in Esa pareja feliz (That Happy Couple, directed by Berlanga and Bardem) and continued to work with leading directors. In the 1970s he played roles in films such as Saura's Ana y los lobos (Anna and the Wolves) (1972), Erice's El espíritu de la colmena (The Spirit of the Beehive) (1973), Armiñán's El amor del capitán Brando (The Love of Captain Brando) (1974) and Juan Estelrich's El anacoreta (The Anchorite) (1976) for which he was awarded the prestigious Silver Bear at Berlin. In the 1980s he appeared in films by Gutiérrez Aragón such as Maravillas (1980), La noche mas hermosa (The Most Beautiful Night) (1984) and La mitad del cielo (Half of Heaven) (1986), in Saura's Los zancos (Stilts) (1984) which he co-scripted, and in Armiñán's Stico (1984) for which he again won a Silver Bear at Berlin. In the 1990s he appeared in Trueba's Oscar winning film Belle Epoque (1993). As well as acting in well over a hundred films he has also directed many films of his own since 1952. Mambrú se fué a la guerra (Marlborough Went to War) (1986) and El viaje a ninguna parte (Journey to Nowhere) (1986), in which he also stars, are good examples of his gentle, subtle humour, the latter being described as "the most distinguished film of the year".
As a dramatist he won the Lope de Vega Prize in 1977 for his play Las bicicletas son para el verano (Bicycles are for Summer) which was adapted for the screen by Chávarri in 1984. He has also written, produced and acted in several television series such as El Pícaro (The Rogue) (1973) and Juan Soldado (Soldier John) (1973), and in 1990 published a two-volume work, El tiempo amarillo (Time in Yellow).
